According to him, every one who has an ambition and focus and can dedicate and devote himself with long term commitment should prepare for civil services as it is very advantageous even if you are not selected for civil services.
He explained about Prelims, mains and interview part of the selection process. Prelims consists of two parts-general studies and CSat. It is a qualifying test. for UPSC prelims, one should know ‘something about everything’ as it tests extension of one’s knowledge. It is the composite score of the Mains and the interview which is responsible for selection/rejection of a candidate. For Mains, one should know ‘everything about something’ as it tests depth of one’s knowledge.
For better studies, according to him one should byheart the syllabus, should focus on what to study and what not to study, should regularly read relevant news from newspapers and should select optional subject based on one’s interest and scoring ability after carefully studying its syllabus. One should also consider the facts such as availability of material, availability for good coaching facilities for it and the time one can devote to study his optional subject before finalising the optional subject.
He insisted that one should refer to NCERT books and other Standard-authenticated books, government publications, a couple of selective magazines for the preparation. One should prepare notes of his own and also practise for answer writing and essay. One should practise solving previous year’s papers and should take training for Mock test from reputed coaching classes.
In interview, the panellists try to know about the personality of the candidate on the basis of interests, hobbies, general and educational background. They look for one’s clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interests and ability for social causes and leadership for the same. Interview is of 275 points and one should try to score maximum in the same.
He also briefed aspirants about what to do and what not to do while preparing for UPSC. He insisted that one should not read too many books as they are not the research scholars. One should revise regularly and should also monitor physical as well as emotional health regularly. One should monitor stress level and should keep himself motivated all through the preparation phase. One should keep on reenergising oneself regularly for the same.
He advised student aspirants that they can get the best of all facilities at JATF. Only thing they have to do is to keep focussed and prepare for exams.
“Everyone who has an ambition & focus and can dedicate & devote himself with long term commitment should prepare for civil services.”
