Shri Ajaykumar Shaktikumar Sancheti is a well known industrialist, philanthropist and politician of Central India. Born on 22nd October, 1965 into the culturally and politically rich Sancheti family of Malkapur, he is the eldest son of the Late Shaktikumarji Sancheti and Smt. Vijaya Sancheti. Ajay, after graduating in Commerce, joined his father’s business and with his vision, foresightedness and excellent public relations skills, he has been able to take the family owned company from a turnover of a few lakhs in 1989 to more than Rs. 1000 crores in 2012.
He has been elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, 2012 after which he has donned the role of non-executive Vice Chairman of the flagship company of the family, SMS Infrastructure Ltd., a leading infrastructure company in Central India with significant presence in the Roads, Power, Urban Development, Mining, Irrigation & Waste Management sectors.
Born into a family having grassroot connection with the erstwhile Jana Sangh, it was but a natural progression for Ajay to be a strong youth leader in his college days. His connection with BJP continued even as he joined his father’s business in 1987. His days as a bachelor ended in February, 1989 when he got married to Savita Bokadia. The couple has 2 sons Nirbhay (recently married to Raveena) who is a management graduate and learning the ropes in the family business, and Varun, a Mechanical engineer who is pursuing further studies in the United Kingdom. Ajay occupied several important portfolios in BJP until his promotion to the Upper House of Parliament in 2012. Since his election, not only has he spoken in the House as the party’s representative on a number of proposed legislations, he has also played an active role in several key committees that he has been nominated to like Public Accounts Committee, Standing Committee on Finance, Standing Committee on Urban Development and Consultative Committee on Commerce & Industry.
Ajay is also well known for his philanthropic work preferring to use his social connects to work to uplift the deprived sections of society, by providing them access to advanced medical facilities and educational facilities at little or no cost. He is the former Chairman of Mahavir International, Nagpur Centre which provides free artificial limbs and Polio callipers to the needy. He is at present the Chairman of the Marwari Foundation which recognises and rewards eminent personalities from backward sections of society. He is also the Chairman of the Nagbhushan Foundation, Nagpur an institution which recognises and rewards eminent personalities whose origins are from Nagpur. An endeavour which is close to his heart is the proposed 500 bedded Charitable Cancer hospital coming up in Nagpur in which he is the Vice Chairman. His magnanimity further extends to the substantial contributions that he makes as a member of the Rotary Club of Nagpur and even at an individual level.
On a personal level, Ajay is a big time foodie (although strictly vegetarian) and very fond of playing table tennis and listening to old Hindi songs. His other passion, travelling, has taken him not only to most parts of the country but also to countries such as USA, UK, Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, Switzerland, France etc. He is a Life member of the Constitution Club, New Delhi.
A family man to the core, he played an integral part in the publication of a 3 volume set Marmsparsh authored by his mother, Smt. Vijaya Sancheti. His uncle Shri C.M. Sancheti is 5th term M.L.A. from Malkapur Constituency of Maharashtra.
